Sources: Rangers in agreement on contract with free-agent Will Smith

The Texas Rangers, one of baseball’s most active teams this offseason, strike again by signing veteran reliever Will Smith.

Free-agent reliever Will Smith and the Texas Rangers are in agreement on a contract, according to sources familiar with the deal. Smith has already completed his physical.

Smith, 33, is the latest signing in what has been another busy offseason for the Rangers. Just an offseason after signing Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and Jon Gray, among others, Texas has signed Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, Andrew Heaney, Martin Perez, Robbie Grossman and now Smith.

Will Smith signing fills a huge void for Texas Rangers

While the Rangers spent heavily on their rotation, they did not spend a single dollar on a free-agent reliever until now. Smith immediately fills the void left for a left-handed reliever left by Matt Moore, who signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels after posting a 1.95 ERA in 63 appearances last season, and gives the Rangers a veteran option for the ninth inning.

“I think it’s somewhat fluid,” manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday when discussing the closer position. “But it’s nice to have two or three guys that can help in that area.”

Those options included Jose Leclerc, who had the most end-of-game experience of any pitcher on the Rangers’ 40-man roster. Joe Barlow, Brock Burke and Jonathan Hernandez are among other internal options. But Smith boasts extensive experience in the ninth inning, recording 91 saves in 10 career seasons, while posting a 3.59 ERA and 664 strikeouts in 553.2 innings.
