Yankees News: 4 offseason decisions Brian Cashman wishes he had back
By Tim Boyle
4) The Yankees will regret having too many infielders without enough outfield options
Cashman’s roster construction is fantastic when we look at the infield. Having one of their starting infielders on the bench each day is an asset. In the meantime, the outfield depth has been ignored.
Stanton remains a more regular DH than an actual outfielder for them. It’s killing the Yankees in terms of roster flexibility. Putting Kiner-Falefa in the outfield and having Oswaldo Cabrera there regularly improves the situation but doesn’t solve it.
Beyond the expected players to make the Opening Day roster, the Yankees don’t have all that much. Estevan Florial isn’t panning out. Cashman did sign several free agents this offseason, including Rafael Ortega, Willie Calhoun, Michael Hermosillo, and Billy McKinney. All are out of minor league options so any stay they have with the big league club would likely be temporary.
The root of many of the offseason mistakes by Cashman all come back to keeping Hicks in such a vital role with the team. He should be on the shortest leash of all. The Yankees should be unafraid to experiment with other hitters in left field. This should include Oswald Peraza and even Anthony Volpe.
Cashman is already on the clock to add a more reliable outfielder to the roster. For now, they’re just passing the time with Hicks.
