NFL insider absolutely skewers Carson Wentz at worst possible time

NFL insider Peter King obliterates Carson Wentz’s costliness in a tremendously blunt manner.

The idea of Carson Wentz was always better than the real thing, to be totally honest with y’all.

With Wentz being released by the Washington Commanders, his third franchise in as many seasons, the cat is most definitely out of the bag when it comes to this former No. 2 overall pick by the Philadelphia Eagles out of North Dakota State. He is inherently reckless, seemingly willing to die on the field every play and not a leader of alpha men. Wentz has talent, but not much else.

Never before have we seen a notable insider harpoon him quite like Peter King did in his latest Football Morning in America column for NBC Sports.

"“Even though Wentz was on his way to a great season before injuring his knee in 2017, he could never repeat it and in fact regressed. I’d argue that no player in NFL history has cost so much and delivered so little.”"

Even though King kicked Wentz while he was down, he is absolutely right in saying “no player in NFL history has cost so much and delivered so little.”

This goes back to the Eagles trading up to get him, the Indianapolis Colts giving up precious capital for a disastrous 2021 campaign and Washington doing the same.

Someone will sign Wentz in free agency, but his days of being a franchise quarterback are toast.

Look. This is hard, man. Wentz had all the traits any general manager would want coming out. He may have played at FCS North Dakota State, but the Bison are an absolute buzzsaw at their level. Wentz played for an outstanding head coach in Chris Klieman. You want proof of it? Just look at the dynamite job Klieman has done since taking over for college football legend Bill Snyder at K-State.

What may have happened to Wentz was he could never shake his ACL tear in 2017, in conjunction with Nick Foles going on a heater of a lifetime. Even more so, Foles may not have been as talented but he could galvanize the Birds to just go out and win anyways. Once Jalen Hurts was drafted, Wentz was dead in the water. Hurts was universally beloved in college, while Wentz … he was not.

Although he did seem to have a good rapport with Taylor Heinicke in the Commanders’ quarterback room, we could never count on him to step up in big moments. The big thing to watch in free agency is if he will reunite with Frank Reich for a third time in Charlotte. I mean, he could, but he can’t! It will show us that Reich has that wretched Colts stank on him and refuses to learn.

Wentz is talented enough to still play in the NFL, but teams do not want a lightning rod backup.
