5) Red Sox reliever Richard Bleier

Richard Bleier was just acquired by Boston this offseason in a trade with Miami that sent former closer Matt Barnes to the Marlins. Bleier might not be with the Red Sox for long.

Bleier, who turns 36 in April, has been very good throughout his career with the exception of the 2019 season. Since 2020, Bleier has appeared in 144 games and he has a 3.09 ERA (137 ERA+).

The best draw for him may be his control as he has only averaged 1.4 walks per nine innings in that span. In each of the last two seasons, he has been in the top percentile of plate appearances ending up in walks, according to Baseball Savant. Batters don’t hit him hard either as he is in the top 10 percent among pitchers and their barrel rate against them.

Bleier is a free agent at the end of the season, which is why the chance that he’s traded is a bit higher. Nearly every playoff contender will be looking for veteran relief help so, if the Sox aren’t in contention, look for him to be moved.
