11. MLB contracts: Rafael Devers, BOS – $313.5M/10 years

The Boston Red Sox extended Rafael Devers for 10 seasons at $313.5M with one of the biggest MLB contracts this offseason. The deal kicks in as of 2024 and runs through 2033, when Devers will be 36.

The two-time All-Star third baseman will be the cornerstone around which the Red Sox build their next competitive team. He’s already won a World Series in Boston in 2018 and heads into his seventh year in the league as a veteran presence for a club that struggled mightily last year.

With Xander Bogaerts leaving for San Diego, the Red Sox front office felt the pressure from fans to retain the services of one of their star players.

Devers was one of the lone bright spots in 2022 for the Red Sox. He slashed .295/.358/.521, with 27 home runs and 88 RBI in a middling offensive lineup.

For his career, the former Silver Slugger is a .283 hitter with an .854 OPS. He averages 33 home runs and 107 RBI per 162 games, so Boston knows what they’ll get for the bulk of the contract.

As Devers heads into his prime, the only way this contract will be deemed a success (mainly by the fans) is if he can help the organization bring another World Series to Fenway.
