Clemson vs. Virginia prediction and odds for ACC Tournament semifinals
By Reed Wallach
Clemson and Virginia meet in the ACC semifinals with the Tigers needing one more win to solidify their NCAA Tournament berth.
The Tigers find themselves right in the mix for a tourney bid and a win against a likely top four seed in the Cavaliers could send the team to the dance. Virginia took the first meeting in Charlottesville, but can Clemson even the season series with a big win on a neutral site in the ACC Tournament?
Here are the odds and our best bet:
Clemson vs. Virginia odds, spread and total
Clemson vs. Virginia prediction and pick
Clemson lost on February 28th on the road, 64-57 as 6.5-point underdogs, but the Tigers did a fine job in that game, holding the Woos to 40% from the field and 26% from beyond the arc. However, UVA went to the line 22 times compared to Clemson’s five, the difference in a competitive matchup.
Clemson’s offense has been firing on all cylinders since February 1st, top 10 in effective field goal percentage and 34th in turnover percentage. The team is going to be able to drag out the Virginia packline defense that is reliant on staying compact and allows plenty of shots along the perimeter.
PJ Hall is going to be the difference in this one, the team’s highest usage player who is shooting 41% from beyond the arc. Look for him the 6’11” Hall to exploit Virginia big man Kadin Shedrick, who is a better rim protector but weaker outside of the paint than Ben Vander Plas, who is out for the year with a hand injury.
UVA’s offense has been the issue for the team’s overall drop in play over their last 10 games, shooting 28% from beyond the arc. For a team that doesn’t generate second chances and plays at a slow tempo, the Cavaliers are capped with their offensive upside against a team that is firing on O at the moment.
I’ll take the underdog Tigers to punch their ticket to the ‘Big Dance.’ with an outright win against a floundering Virginia team.
