Stefon Diggs cannot wrap his head around Bills struggles

Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs cannot wrap his head around the team’s struggles to reach their full potential.

Buffalo Bills wide receiver, Stefon Diggs, has posted some somewhat cryptic tweets, leaving many to wonder about his future in Buffalo. During his appearance on The Shop, Diggs said nothing about leaving his current team; however, he spoke about the Bills’ inability to reach their full potential.

"“It doesn’t make sense. I’ll rack my brain with this s**t at this point. I think it’s more execution than anything. S**t is small little pieces on why it’s not going right. We’ve got the players. We’ve got the plays. Why s**t ain’t coming together? That’s where you draw some of those questions. I never want to question who I am, I never want to question how I am. I’m giving this s**t everything I’ve got. I’m dying on the hill for that.”"

While what Stefon Diggs said has been said by many, that the Bills have the right players, something is missing from their team that could make all the difference.

The Bills reached the AFC Championship game in 2020, where the Kansas City Chiefs defeated them, and since then have lost in the divisional round in 2021 and 2022. The Bills entered the 2022 season as two-time defending AFC East champions and seemed ready for another Super Bowl contender season, so expectations were high for fans and the team.

Looking at Stefon Diggs and the Bills’ 2022 season

Their 2022 season was not all bad; they finished with a 13-3 record and clinched the AFC East division for the third straight season; however, the off-the-field struggles may have affected them. From Damar Hamlin’s horrific on-field collapse to blizzards taking them away from their home stadium, Buffalo had to deal with struggles that other teams did not, and ultimately they can, and most likely did, have an impact on the mental state of the players and coaches.

Diggs, one of the league’s best receivers, had a top-five receiver season. He finished with 108 receptions (4th overall), 1,429 receiving yards (5th), and 11 touchdowns (tied-3rd). Bills quarterback, Josh Allen, had himself another tremendous season, recording 4,283 passing yards (7th), 35 touchdowns (tied-2nd), 14 interceptions (tied-30th), and a QBR of 71.4 (2nd). Buffalo also had the 3rd highest points per game with 27.7, however lower than 2021, where they averaged 29.8 points per game.

Buffalo’s defense allowed 319.4 opponent yards per game (7th), higher than their 289.2 in 2021. The defense also allowed 19.1 opponent points per game (4th), slightly higher than the 18.3 in 2021.

While the Bills are far from a bottom-of-the-league team, they have shown slight regression from previous years, possibly due to players, the coaching staff, or both. The recent exit of defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier suggests that needed change is already happening within the organization.
