3 moves the Steelers have to avoid this offseason
2. Overdraft Kelee Ringo
Ringo has all the physical tools required to be a top-flight starter in the NFL. Unfortunately, his technique at Georgia last season left much to be desired. That’s why the Steelers shouldn’t be the team to gamble on him in Round 1.
Pittsburgh should have plenty of superior options available to them if they want to address the cornerback position with the No. 17 overall selection. Joey Porter Jr. is one guy who projects to be available there who is more ready to play right away than Ringo. Maryland defender Deonte Banks would even be a better option due to his unique combination of size and speed.
Ringo wasn’t terrible in 2022, but his PFF grade of 71.4 for the season shows just how many big plays he gave up for the Bulldogs. His penchant for big mistakes will only be amplified at the professional level. His technique can be improved with quality coaching, but the Steelers don’t need to draft a project at corner on Day One.
Teams with more settled depth charts in their secondaries might see Ringo’s long-term potential as being worth a gamble in the middle of Round 1. The Steelers should go for a more ready-made player. They can get a player with a similar upside who is prepared to make a positive impact as a rookie starter at No. 17. Gambling on Ringo isn’t worth the risk for a team in Pittsburgh’s position.
