March Madness rankings: No. 50-41

50. Pittsburgh (22-11): The Panthers were trounced by Duke in the ACC Tournament last week, and yet, Jeff Capel’s group made it to the First Four in Dayton. Pittsburgh is fortunate to be in the tournament and can prove the doubters wrong with a strong showing this week.

49. Mississippi State (21-12): The Bulldogs snuck into the field of 68 despite the fact that several other teams could have laid claim to their spot in the tournament. Mississippi State gets a reprieve with a First Four matchup against Pittsburgh.

48. Nevada (22-10): The fact that Nevada made it in over teams like Rutgers and Oklahoma State is a bit puzzling, but the Wolfpack will be looking to make believers out of those who think they don’t belong.

47. NC State (23-10): Which version of the Wolfpack shows up in March? Is it the team that lost by 26 to Clemson in the ACC Tournament or the one who clobbered Duke by 24 in January. NC State is too inconsistent to get a much higher ranking than this, but has the ability to beat most teams in the tourney.

46. Charleston (31-3): The Cougars score a lot of points, and with only three losses on the season, it feels weird to see them ranked this low. But the Colonial Athletic Conference is not loaded with stellar talent.

45. Boise State (24-9): The Broncos lack of depth could hurt them in the NCAA Tournament. Last year, Boise State was an automatic qualifier after winning the Mountain West Tournament. This season, the Broncos are an at-large team and will need some of their football team’s magic to rub off if they hope to make a deep run in the bracket.

44. Drake (27-7): The Bulldogs boast the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year in Tucker DeVries and own a victory over NCAA Tournament participant Mississippi State. Miami should be a little nervous going up against Drake in Round 1.

43. Oral Roberts (30-4): The Owls finished with an undefeated record (18-0) in the Summit League and have won 17 straight games. Oral Roberts didn’t get a great draw going up against Duke in the first round, but the Blue Devils better not overlook the Owls.

42. Utah State (26-8): The Aggies beat the aforementioned Oral Roberts Owls by 10, but also lost three times to San Diego State this season. Utah State was a bubble team heading into last weekend and landed the 10-seed in the South Region.

41. VCU (27-7): The Rams are riding high after knocking off seven straight opponents and winning the Atlantic-10 regular season and conference tournament. If you’re looking for a Cinderella team in the Big Dance, take a flier on Mike Rhoades’ team.
