MLB news: Remembering a New York Yankees legend
Joe Pepitone passed away on Monday at the age of 82, leaving behind plenty of memories for what he did on the baseball field and the personality he brought to it.
“The Yankees are deeply saddened by the passing of former Yankee Joe Pepitone, whose playful and charismatic personality and on-field contributions made him a favorite of generations of Yankees fans even beyond his years with the team in the 1960s,” the Yankees said in a statement.
Born in Brooklyn, Pepitone played eight of his 12 MLB seasons with the Yankees, earning three All-Star Game appearances and a pair of Gold Gloves during that span. In 1,051 games with the Yankees, Pepitone slashed .252/.294/.423 and smacked 166 of his 219 career home runs.
Pepitone was a part of pop culture, referred to several times on “Seinfeld,” and was also in the news in recent months for a dispute with the Baseball Hall of Fame over the bat that Mickey Mantle used to hit his 500th home run. Pepitone filed suit against the Baseball Hall of Fame, saying he agreed to “lend” the bat to Cooperstown while the Baseball Hall of Fame maintained the bat was donated. Pepitone eventually dropped the suit.
