2. Broncos trade partner for Jerry Jeudy or Courtland Sutton: Dallas Cowboys

Once again, Payton’s career connections come into play considering his longstanding ties to Dallas. Payton, a former Cowboys assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach, has long been rumored to triumphantly return and assume the head coaching position in Dallas. It would have been a full-circle moment for the former Cowboys assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach to triumphantly return, but Payton could still utilize his relationship with Jerry Jones to ship some wide receiver help to Dallas.

In early March, Stephen Jones said that the Cowboys are “looking hard” at improving the wide receiver room in Dallas.

If the Cowboys can’t find adequate options in free agency, they could turn to Payton and work out a trade that sends draft picks to Denver.

While most teams will likely target the talented and cost-effective Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton is the more expensive option that Payton may be more motivated to trade. The Cowboys have sprung for wide receivers in the past with immediate success, a recent example being Amari Cooper’s meteoric rise in Texas.

Right now, the highest-earning Cowboys receiver in 2023 is Michael Gallup, with CeeDee Lamb hardly making a dent on cap space with his rookie contract. If the Cowboys could free up more cap space, they should strongly consider the wide receiver options Payton could be bringing to the market.
