MLB news: Yankees fans remind Joey Gallo they haven’t forgotten about him
On Monday, the Minnesota Twins downed the New York Yankees by a 1-0 score in a spring training game. On paper, it may seem like just another matchup on the way to Opening Day. However, Yankees fans made it personal with a former New York outfielder now playing for the Twins.
Joey Gallo, starting at first base for the Twins, went 1-for-3 with a strikeout in the contest, keeping a solid spring going as he looks to start over in Minnesota. That’s the present, but Yankees fans clearly had the past in mind, traveling to Minnesota’s spring training home and booing and heckling Gallo every chance they had.
That included player introductions and every time he stepped to the plate, especially when he logged a strikeout in the seventh inning. Yankees fans made clear they haven’t forgotten that Gallo struck out 194 times in his 501 plate appearances in the Bronx.
Acquired by New York from Texas at the 2021 MLB trade deadline, Gallo never found his footing with the Yankees, posting a combined .159/.291/.368 slash line with 25 homers and 46 RBI.
While it’s clear the 29-year-old Gallo is looking to move on with the Twins, it’s also clear that Yankees fans haven’t moved on from a player they believe was an albatross for the franchise. And you can bet Gallo will hear plenty more from them when the Twins pay a visit to the Bronx for a four-game series starting on April 13.
