NFL rumors: Fletcher Cox took a hometown discount
The Philadelphia Eagles offseason was off to a miserable start, having lost four defensive starters on the first day of the NFL tampering period. Philly’s defense — namely its defensive line — played a vital role in the team’s Super Bowl run. To reach those heights for the second consecutive year, they’ll need a similar performance.
Fletcher Cox was one of the team’s top priorities entering the offseason. They secured his return on a one-year deal thanks to Cox’s willingness to take a hometown discount. ESPN didn’t downplay Cox’s importance in franchise lore in their article about his return:
"“Cox, 32, is one of the most decorated defensive players in Eagles history. His six Pro Bowl appearances are the most ever by an Eagles defensive tackle and the fifth-most overall behind only Chuck Bednarik (8), Brian Dawkins (7), Jason Peters (7) and Reggie White (7). He has also been named an All-Pro four times.”"
Cox was expected to receive a multiyear deal worth more than $10 million a season.
In the last 24 hours, the Eagles have re-signed Cox, James Bradberry and Brandon Graham. They also kept Darius Slay under contract after it was reported that they would release him.
