NFL Rumors: Steelers shuffle LB room signing Elandon Roberts, cutting Myles Jack

It’s definitely going to be an offseason of changes for the Pittsburgh Steelers, particularly on defense. Obviously, the stalwarts such as T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Cam Heyward and Minkah Fitzpatrick, among others, aren’t going anywhere, but there are changes.

Cornerback saw a lot of those early in free agency with Cameron Sutton leaving, Patrick Peteson coming in, and William Jackson III being cut. But now the franchise appears to be doing some shuffling with its linebacker room as well.

On Thursday, the Steelers agreed to a two-year contract with linebacker Elandon Roberts, previously with the Dolphins. In the same breath, they also cut linebacker Myles Jack, who the team brought in last offseason.

From a surface level, this is an upgrade for Pittsburgh at the position. Roberts is a more versatile player who, despite being a bit older, has simply been better than Jack in recent years. Moreover, Roberts fits right into any Brian Flores philosophies held over from the now Vikings DC’s year with the Steelers.

At the same time, though, it’s hard not to question the overall roster-building with the moves the Steelers have made in free agency. They appear to be set on getting older on defense while not exactly moving the needle a great deal in terms of talent. That’s a bold strategy, especially when considering the defense being the strength of the team and the upgrades needed on offense.
