March Madness 2023: Where is Oral Roberts University?
By Drew Koch
No, Oral Roberts University is not a dental school. But the Golden Eagles will be looking to drill some three-pointers during March Madness.
There’s always a handful of schools that appear in March Madness and, unless you’re an alumi, you have absolutely no clue where those universities are located.
Schools like Kentucky, Illinois, and Arizona are pretty easy to figure out. Others like Purdue (Indiana), Marquette (Wisconsin), and Xavier (Ohio), while they could be considered a little more difficult, are well-known throughout most circles of college basketball fans. But where in the world is Oral Roberts University?
March Madness 2023: Where is Oral Roberts University?
Oral Roberts University is a private evangelical college located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was founded 60 years ago and named after the recognizable preacher Granville Oral Roberts.
The Golden Eagles are a member of the Summit League and are making their seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament. Two years ago, Paul Mills and his team were the talk of the tournament after upsetting then-No. 2 seed Ohio State 75-72 in overtime.
But the Golden Eagles’ dream run through March Madness didn’t stop. ORU took down No. 7 seed Florida in the Second Round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament and became just the second 15-seed to reach the Sweet Sixteen.
Oral Roberts’ path to the Sweet Sixteen in 2023 might be just as difficult. The Golden Eagles open the tournament against the No. 5 seed Duke Blue Devils who are playing their best basketball of the season after winning the ACC Tournament last Saturday.
If ORU is fortunate enough to get past Jon Scheyer’s team, then a matchup with No. 4 Tennessee or No. 13 Louisiana await the Golden Eagles in the Round of 32.
If Oral Roberts can make it to the Elite Eight, it’ll be the second time in school history that’s happened. Of course, back when the then-Titans (Oral Roberts changed their mascot the Golden Eagles in 1993) went to the Elite Eight, there were only 32 teams in the Big Dance.
