March Madness is so much better with the Kennesaw State Owls taking part in it.

It seems as though the No. 14-seeded Kennesaw State Owls could knock off the No. 3-seeded Xavier Musketeers in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

March Madness is not March Madness without a few big upsets during the opening weekend. The Owls may be underseeded and plucky to begin with, but Amir Abdur-Rahim’s upstart program isn’t messing around. In his fourth year at the helm, the Owls have completed a massive turnaround, going from a one-win team in 2019-20 to a program that won 26 games and the ASUN in 2023.

So where is Kennesaw State University even located at?

Where is Kennesaw State University located?

Kennesaw State University is located in Kennesaw, Georgia some 30 miles north of Atlanta up I-75. Initially a bit of a commuter school, the university has made athletics a priority in the last decade. The Owls made the leap up to Division I in hoops not that long ago and will be members of Conference USA in all sports of note beginning in 2024. The school’s brand has never been bigger.

Kennesaw State University basketball NCAA Tournament history

This is the first NCAA Tournament appearance at the Division I level in program history. The Owls did make the tournament three times at the Division II level from 2003 to 2004. This included a national championship victory back in 2004. With Abdur-Rahim being a local legend like his older brother Shareef at nearby Wheeler High School in Marietta, we are so happy this team is thriving.

No matter what happens over the next few days or weeks, the Owls have arrived triumphantly as a major basketball program. There was debate adding them as an at-large team, even if they did not win the Atlantic Sun’s conference tournament. Abdur-Rahim’s turnaround job at the helm of Kennesaw could get him bigger jobs down the line. The fact he is a local makes this even sweeter.

Congratulations on making it to the big dance and having the college basketball world’s attention.
