UMBC has iconic reaction to FDU joining 16 seeds to upset 1 seed
By Jakob Ashlin
UMBC, the first No. 16 seed to beat a No. 1 seed, had a great reaction to FDU’s historic upset over Purdue in March Madness.
History was made on Friday night!
For the second time in March Madness history, a No. 16 seed defeated a No. 1 seed, as the Farleigh Dickinson Knights upset the Purdue Boilermakers 63-58.
It was a shocking loss for Purdue. The Big Ten Champions had a 29-6 record, which included victories over Gonzaga, Duke, Ohio State, Maryland, Michigan State, and Penn State. Wooden Award finalist Zach Edey led the Boilermakers with 22.3 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks.
Edey performed well on Friday night, posting a game-high 21 points (7-11 FG), 15 rebounds, and two blocks. However, his teammates shot a combined 28.6 percent from the field. Curiously, Purdue pivoted from Edey down the stretch; he did not attempt a field goal in the final nine minutes and 25 seconds of the game.
Conversely, it was a tremendous victory for FDU. Their defense led the way, as Edey’s teammates struggled to score the basketball. The Knights also forced 16 turnovers, including 11 steals.

FDU becomes the second No. 16 seed to upset a No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament history. The only other team to accomplish that feat was UMBC in 2018, when they defeated Virginia, 74-54.
UMBC reacted to FDU’s victory with a great Simpsons reference:
Yes, UMBC is no longer the only one.
In 2018, UMBC lost in the second round to No. 9 Kansas State.
FDU will look to keep their tournament run going on Sunday, as they will take on the winner of Memphis and FAU.
This year, March Madness has been more unpredictable than ever. In addition to FDU’s win, No. 15 seed Princeton defeated No. 2 seed Arizona, and No. 13 seed Furman defeated No. 4 seed Virginia.
