St. Louis Cardinals spring training biggest losers No. 1: Paul DeJong, IF

The seeming downfall of DeJong over the last few seasons has been incredibly disappointing.

There was hope DeJong would have a great Spring Training after working this offseason with new assistant hitting coach, Daniel Nicolaisen. He was touting the new approaches he was learning from Nicolaisen.

With Tommy Edman playing for Team Korea in the WBC, it would have given him the opportunity to make it a real competition for the shortstop position when he returned. But the real competition has come from Masyn Winn.

In six games, DeJong has hit .154/.421/.462 with an OPS of .883, a double, a homer, six walks and an RBI. In 12 games, Winn has hit .333/.395/.636 with an OPS of 1.031, two doubles, a triple, two home runs and nine RBI.

Winn is 20 years old and has plenty of time to make it big in the Cardinals organization. While he is playing so well, it will be curious to see if he does play for St. Louis this summer.

DeJong is in the final guaranteed year of his six-year, $26 million contract. Mozeliak and Marmol will give DeJong every opportunity to compete this summer, whether regular or bench role. It will be curious to see how much time DeJong will be given this season

It’s disappointing to see him losing out on such a huge opportunity. Hopefully, he makes the most of the remaining chances he gets with the Cardinals.
