Every college basketball fan heard it 1,000 times during the regular season that the Big 12 was the best league in the country. There was certainly a case for that given the prowess of Kansas, Texas, upstart Kansas State, Baylor and many others. So these teams were expected to be the ones to watch in March Madness.
Now we’re entering the Sweet 16 after a wild opening weekend and first two rounds of the 2023 NCAA Tournament. One team from Kansas is still dancing, but probably not the one that most people expected. But what about the rest of the conference.
There were initially seven Big 12 teams playing in the NCAA Tournament. At the Sweet 16, how many are now left in the March Madness bracket?

With the big shock of No. 1 seed Kansas getting upset in the Second Round, there are now only two Big 12 teams remaining in the NCAA Tournament as 3-seeded Kansas State and 2-seeded Texas will take the floor for the Sweet 16.
Here’s a look at how the other five teams from the conference fared in their games that saw them bow out of March Madness.
- 9-seed West Virginia (Lost First Round to Maryland, 67-65)
- 6-seed Iowa State (Lost First Round to Pitt, 59-41)
- 1-seed Kansas (Lost Second Round to Arkansas, 72-71)
- 3-seed Baylor (Lost Second Round to Creighton, 85-76)
- 6-seed TCU (Lost Second Round to Gonzaga, 84-81)
Now it’s up to the Wildcats and Longhorns to keep the Big 12 hopes alive in March Madness. Kansas State will play in the Sweet 16 on Thursday, March 23 against Michigan State. Texas will face Xavier on Friday, March 24.
