NFL Rumors: A Chiefs racehorse deserves to be set free and the latest on Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson
By Kristen Wong
Get up to speed on the latest NFL rumors surrounding Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson, and one holed-up Chiefs star.
No two quarterbacks has controlled the offseason news cycle more than Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers and Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson. It could be called “The Offseason of Rodgers/ Brett Favre’s clone” just as much as it could be called “The Offseason of Lamar.”
For the 39-year-old quarterback, trade negotiation talks continue to stall as the two teams fight over him with the pettiness and antagonism of divorced parents. For the 26-year-old dual-threat phenom, he’s only allowed to discuss arranged marriages, and his dowry price is much too high for most suitors.
Then there’s the question of a Chiefs star playmaker who’s been collecting dust alongside the franchise’s Lombardy Trophies. Will he stay for another tension-filled season in Kansas City, or will the team put him out of his misery and send him to a more loving home?
Here are the three biggest NFL rumors going on today.
NFL Rumors: Aaron Rodgers-Jets trade is far from complete
At this point, Aaron Rodgers is sitting in a sauna with the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets just letting it all hang loose and sweating it out. Who will cave in first?
A quick timeline of the Rodgers saga so far: after emerging from the darkness, Rodgers tells Pat McAfee that he wants to play for the Jets in 2023. The Jets work on signing some of his friends including Allen Lazard and Odell Beckham Jr. and are still in trade talks with Packers brass about fair compensation in a trade package.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer said that Rodgers’ value is considered to be a “Day 2 pick” with one or two conditional picks, but definitely not the first-round pick that the Packers are presumably asking for.
Breer followed up that report with his projection for when the trade might actually happen:
"The Jets can start their offseason program four weeks from today, by the way, which is the next big checkpoint in this saga, with the draft soon after that. I don’t know if Rodgers will be there for that, but my guess would be he would be at OTAs in May to get going with his new teammates, which is something he hasn’t done of late in Green Bay."
May isn’t for another two months, so don’t hold your breath waiting for a Rodgers trade to happen anytime soon.
In light of the anxiety-inducing, never-ending nightmare cycle of this beat, here are a few Tweets on Rodgers to add some cheer into your life:
