Former Dolphins WR shades Tua Tagovailoa after signing with Bills

A former Dolphins wide receiver threw shade at his old quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, and stoked the fires of an upcoming AFC East rivalry.
Miami Dolphins wideout Trent Sherfield left the team for a division rival and felt no shame in dissing his former quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa.
Sherfield joined the Buffalo Bills this offseason on a one-year deal and enters a talented offense helmed by Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs.
He left after just one season in Miami, recording 30 catches for 417 yards and two touchdowns, and will join his fourth team of his career; Sherfield hasn’t enjoyed much success in the league so far but could benefit from Allen’s arm next season.
What did Sherfield have to say about his own move? He could have waxed poetic about Allen’s greatness and how blessed he is to have found a new home, but he chose violence.
While Sherfield came short of name-dropping Tua’s name, everybody knew who he was referring to.
Tua Tagovailoa gets thrown under the bus by a former Dolphins teammate
A quick eye test will prove Allen is the the superior quarterback to Tagovailoa. However, it’s just not good business to diss your former quarterback when you leave for a division rival.
The Bills and Dolphins split their series last season, with the Dolphins eking out a narrow victory in September and the Bills coming back from behind to beat Miami in December. Both games were decided by three or fewer points.
This upcoming season, the Bills-Dolphins matchups should prove just as enticing as before. Buffalo let many of their receivers contracts (Isaiah McKenzie, Jake Kumerow, and Cole Beasley) expire this free agency, and Sherfield will probably fit in a few notches down the depth chart and play a limited role behind Diggs and Gabriel Davis.
The 26-year-old talks of becoming an “elite” receiver but hasn’t posted a single season over 500 receiving yards while Tagovailoa has been steadily improving in the last three years, throwing 25 touchdowns against eight interceptions in 2022.
At least Tagovailoa still has the rest of his career ahead of him and is situated in a desirable offense that allows him to thrive — Sherfield, a WR3 at best, is quickly running out of chances and can only command prove-it one-year deals at his age. We’ll see who gets the last laugh.
