Exciting Red Sox prospect’s injury puts Opening Day in doubt
Boston Red Sox prospect Triston Casas’ availability for Opening Day is unclear due to a recent injury.
Top prospect Triston Casas is expected to be the Boston Red Sox starting first baseman this season, and fans are naturally excited to see what the 23-year-old can do in his first season as a full-time player.
Yet, they may now need to wait to see him play, unfortunately, as he is dealing with left fifth finger pain and is day-to-day, according to Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe.
Casas has shown signs in spring training that he is ready for a big role with the Red Sox, so this development is concerning. This is especially so if his injury does not improve over the next few days, and he is forced to miss regular-season time because of it.
Red Sox news: Triston Casas injury puts Opening Day in question
Thankfully, Casas’ injury does not appear to be a long-term one. However, at the same time, the Red Sox will be hoping that he can return by Opening Day, as he has been simply excellent this spring.
In 41 at-bats, the promising prospect has two home runs, seven RBIs, and a .341 batting average. Overall, he has been hitting extremely well for contact, and the Red Sox will need that during the regular season if they hope to keep up with their American League East rivals.
If Casas ends up needing to miss some regular-season time, it could open the door for Bobby Dalbec to start the year at first base. However, when noting that he is coming off of a rough season that saw him sport a .215 batting average in 117 games played, it is apparent that Boston would much rather have Casas available.
Nevertheless, all of Red Sox nation will be waiting to see if Casas is ready to go over these next few days from here.
