MLB insider: The best and worst trade packages for Bryan Reynolds, Alexis Diaz and Braves
Trade proposal: Alan Trejo to the Braves
Analysis: Alan Trejo has played in only 63 games in two major-league seasons, but got to showcase what he can do at shortstop in the World Baseball Classic for Team Mexico. And it was enough for Jon Morris of MLB Network to say that Trejo has the ability to be one of baseball’s best defensive shortstops.
With the Braves demoting Vaughn Grissom to Triple-A, Atlanta clearly has a need for a shortstop. But if they look outside the organization, it would seem likely that they’d want more of a sure thing.
Think along the lines of Milwaukee Brewers star shortstop Willy Adames. The Braves poked around on Adames earlier in the offseason, but were told that the team had no intentions of trading him at the time.
But the Braves appear likely to stay in-house at shortstop, especially with veteran Orlando Arcia in the fold, and the team not wanting to block Grissom long-term. Trejo makes sense as a trade candidate for the Rockies, though, especially with rookie Ezequiel Tovar looking like the shortstop of the future in Colorado and Gold Glover Ryan McMahon being the long-term answer at second base.
This trade had potential. I just don’t think it’s the right fit for either team.
Verdict: Decline.
