Philadelphia Phillies slugger Rhys Hoskins was carted off the field during a spring training game with what looked to be a knee injury.
The Phillies are already down Bryce Harper for the first half of the regular season. Rhys Hoskins could be next, as the Phils first baseman suffered a non-contact knee injury during spring training.
In Philadelphia’s spring training game against the Detroit Tigers, Hoskins fell while trying to field a ball from first base. Shorty after the play ended, Hoskins was taken off the field in a cart, where he received further medical attention.
Last season, Hoskins slashed .246/.332/.462 with 30 home runs in 156 games played. He was an anchor in the middle of the Phils lineup.
Rhys Hoskins injury: How long will Phillies star be out?
The extent of Hoskins injury is unknown at this time. He was removed from the game, and will undergo further testing in the coming days. The immediate reaction was a somber one, especially by the baseball media.
Hoskins ailment was a freak issue, as he was backtracking on a ground ball off the bat of Detroit Tigers slugger Austin Meadows. It was there that he fell to the grass.
Hoskins, who did not play in the World Baseball Classic, has been red hot in Phillies spring training, looking ready to go for Opening Day and beyond. It makes such an injury all the more tragic.
Here’s to hoping it wasn’t as bad as it looked.
