Another No. 1 seed in the 2023 men’s NCAA Tournament is eliminated, as the Alabama Crimson Tide lost to the San Diego State Aztecs in the Sweet 16.
Another round of the 2023 men’s NCAA Tournament, another No. 1 seed has been sent packing.
The Alabama Crimson Tide were considered one of the favorites to win the entire tourney, and win their first national championship in men’s basketball in program history. They easily went through No. 16 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and No. 8 Maryland in the first two rounds to reach the Sweet 16 for the 10th time ever. Unfortunately for them, their bad luck of making it to the Elite Eight came back to haunt them.
On Friday night, the No. 1 Crimson Tide fell to the No. 5 San Diego State Aztecs by the score of 71-64. This is now the ninth time that Alabama has lost in the Sweet 16. But there was also some history made by the Aztecs, as they are now the first Mountain West conference team to make it to the Elite Eight.
Let’s just say that Twitter didn’t exactly show much mercy against the Crimson Tide.

San Diego State senior guard Darrion Trammel led the way for his team, scoring 21 points while making 9-of-16 shots from the field and 3-for-5 shots from the three-point line.
This now ends the run for Alabama, who were mired with controversy stemming from the capital murder charges against former player Darius Miles that resulted in the death of 23-year-old Jamea Harris. Star player Brandon Miller was linked to the case, as police said he provided the gun to Miles that Michael Davis used in the shooting. Miller has not been charged in the incident.
Miller made 3-of-19 field goal attempts for just nine points, while turning the basketball over a team-high six times.
As a team, Alabama made just 3-of-27 three point shots in the entire game.
San Diego State now moves on as the first Mountain West team to make it to the Elite Eight. They will now face the winner of No. 6 Creighton and No. 15 Princeton on Sunday, March 26.
