By Josh Wilson
Teams are finalizing their rosters in the lead-up to MLB Opening Day on Thursday, March 30th.
Does it get better than spring arriving, the sun breaking through gray skies, and MLB Opening Day?
No. No it does not.
Opening Day, which arrives in just a few days on Thursday, March 30th, comes with a lot of anticipation among fans, players, and front offices. All 30 teams are beginning to put the finishing touches on their day-one rosters.
That’s where the focus of our MLB rumors roundup falls today. We’ve got updates on two interesting Rockies players poised to make the final roster, as well as an exciting young addition to the Cardinals final roster (and some behind-the-scenes footage on him learning the news).
Mike Moustakas makes it another year in the big leagues with Rockies
Weeks ago, the Rockies took a chance on Mike Moustakas to help give them some options in the infield on the heels of an injury to second baseman Brendan Rogers.
Moustakas was originally signed to a minor league deal but performed well enough to earn himself a spot on the 26-man roster, he learned Saturday.
Moustakas was released by the Reds who had to eat a substantial portion of his remaining contract after a few years of disappointing results. The Rockies, on the other hand, only need to pay him the veteran minimum now that he’s made the final roster.
Most have surmised that Moustakas will not play second base himself, but rather serve as a designated hitter and start occasionally at first and third, allowing other infielders to rotate into second base to fill in for Rogers.
