Braves reveal City Connect jerseys with epic star-studded hype video

The Atlanta Braves revealed their fresh City Connect jerseys with a hype video just in time for opening week of the 2023 MLB season.

For a city like Atlanta, you’re going to have to do a big reveal. The Braves did just that, rolling out the proverbial red carpet with a cinematic, high-stakes advertisement to show off their new uniforms.

The ad starts off with a helicopter landing in centerfield at Truist Park, and out pops Ludacris in the new uniform. That’s where a plot hole develops, because the rest of the video is a security detail delivering the new jersey — presumably to keep it secret — to someone for a big reveal… Even though the viewer already knows what the jersey looks like.

Nevertheless, we’ll play along and say the video was well produced and a fun hype when other teams might simply just reveal the jersey with a simple graphic.

The locked briefcase is passed from hand to hand throughout the video, and cinematic shots of Atlanta are sprinkled in.

Finally, the briefcase lands in the hands of Hank Aaron’s widow, Billye Aaron. Confusingly, she’s in the upper luxury section of Truist Park despite the fact that the jersey just took a journey all across Atlanta, so more plot holes develop…

Her reaction is great, though. Clearly, she approves. Braves fans should, too.

Atlanta Braves reveal City Connect jerseys for 2023

The Braves will rock red, white, and blue City Connect jerseys for designated games in 2023 with white torsos, blue sleeves, and red accents. On the right side of the jersey is “The A”.

It’s a nod to the colorway the Braves wore in the 70s when Hank Aaron was their headlining star. Importantly, though, instead of a lowercase cursive “a” as was on the hats in that era, the A featured on these jerseys is a capital A.

Speaking of caps: This video did not feature a single new cap. The closest thing we got were people wearing the Aaron-era caps.

A press release told us about the caps, though: A capital A in the same colorway as the rest of the uni, with a white front and blue back, and blue brim.

They also have “Keep Swinging #44” embroidered on the underside of the brim, an homage to Aaron’s motto.

Other details from the press release, visualized in the short clip above:

• There’s a “715” in scoreboard lights, a nod to Aaron’s 715th home-run, which set a then-record
• A crown design on the sleeves as a nod to Aaron’s nickname, the Home Run King
• “Keep Swinging #44” also shows up above the jocktag

Some fans called the uniforms uninspired and lazy since they’re heavily reductive of the retro Braves jerseys. I’d argue they’re highly inspired and an incredible nod to Aaron, one of the best ballplayers in history who passed in 2021.
