Lions draft picks 2023: Every selection Detroit has in April
Head coach Dan Campbell guided the Men from the Motor City to a winning record in 2022. There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the Detroit Lions.
These are exciting times in the Motor City. The Detroit Lions finished 9-8 in 2022 and in second place in the NFC North. It was the club’s first winning campaign since a 9-7 finish in 2017 under then-head coach Jim Caldwell. Unfortunately that wasn’t enough for the veteran teacher to hang on to his job. Enter the Matt Patricia Era, which was nothing short of a total disaster.
Dan Campbell went winless (0-10-1) in his first 11 games as the team’s newest head coach in 2021. The Lions are a combined 12-11 since. The club won eight of their last 10 outings after a 1-6 start this past season. It’s safe to say that there’s plenty of reason for optimism.

Detroit has the sixth overall pick from the Los Angeles Rams via the 2021 deal that sent quarterback Matthew Stafford to Sean McVay’s club. That extra second-round pick and the lack of a fourth-round selection are both part of the deal that had former first-round tight T.J. Hockenson to the division-rival Vikings.
Lions draft needs 2023
This is a talented team that still requires a lot of help on defense. When it comes to the draft – the list of needs via Pro Football Focus (subscription required) – the Lions could fill some holes on the other side of the ball and give quarterback Jared Goff some more options.
- Wide receiver
- Tight end
- Interior defensive line
Holmes hasn’t signed a ton of players in free agency but the team added a lot of quality performers, especially in the secondary. The newcomers include cornerbacks Cameron Sutton (Steelers) and Emmanuel Moseley (49ers) and safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson (Eagles).
Detroit gave up the most total yards per game in the league in 2022 and coordinator Aaron Glenn’s unit gave up 48 offensive touchdowns, including 26 through the air.
