What Braves latest contract extension mean for Vaughn Grissom
By Mark Powell
The Atlanta Braves signed Orlando Arcia to a contract extension on Thursday morning. What does that decision mean for Vaughn Grissom, who was tabbed as Dansby Swanson’s replacement?
The Atlanta Braves love what Orlando Arcia brings to the table. Whether he is starting or backing up Vaughn Grissom is irrelevant to Alex Anthopoulos and the Atlanta front office.
Per FanSided MLB Insider Robert Murray, the Braves signed Arcia to a three-year, $7.3 million deal. That’s backup money, and it’s nothing for Arcia to be ashamed of. He receives a long-term guarantee, which isn’t typical of a player in his position.
Arcia, as well as manager Brian Snitker, were grateful he’ll be around for at least the new few seasons.
“I’m glad to know that he’s going to be around for a little bit,” Snitker told reporters before Thursday’s game. “That’s really nice because he’s a wonderful, wonderful young man.”
Braves: What Orlando Arcia’s contract means for Vaughn Grissom
Ron Washington’s message to Vaughn Grissom after he didn’t win the starting job was simple.
“If you don’t like it, play better.”
Grissom shared this after he was sent down to Triple-A Gwinnett. While the 22-year-old hit well at the plate in spring training, his play in the field was questionable at times. This, when compared to the steady hand of the veteran Arcia, is why he didn’t start the season in Atlanta.
Arcia’s contract shouldn’t impact Grissom’s development whatsoever. if anything, it provides the Braves with a backup plan, and one they hope to not employ.
Grissom remains the shortstop of the future for the Braves. He is Dansby Swanson’s heir, if you will, at the position. But the Braves aren’t about to hand him the position, though.
There’s a good chance we’ll see Grissom in the majors again this season. He’ll have to earn that spot.
