Mets fans embrace familiar pain with Justin Verlander injury update
By Mark Powell
This has to be record timing for the Mets. New York announced a brutal injury update to co-ace Justin Verlander, who will be re-evaluated in a week.
It wouldn’t be Opening Day without a Metsy Mets update.
New York moved on from Jacob deGrom, who signed an expensive long-term contract with the Texas Rangers. Much of the argument of letting deGrom walk was his frequent injury issues. When deGrom suffered an injury in spring training. — albeit a minor one — Mets fans had their say.
Now, it’s biting them in the butt.
Steve Cohen’s front office signed Justin Verlander as a suitable replacement for deGrom. Verlander is a former Cy Young award winner, and could do so again this season in the National League if he can stay healthy. That’s now a pretty major if, given the news the Mets just dropped on Opening Day.
“Justin Verlander will be placed on the IL with a low grade teres major strain. He will continue throwing at moderate intensity and we will rescan in a week. We will provide an update at that time,” the Mets released in a statement.
It’s unclear exactly how much time Verlander will miss, but given his advanced age, the team will be cautious with him.
Justin Verlander injury: Mets fans in familiar pain
Should Verlander’s injury worsen, he’ll miss significant time, but thankfully the Mets have Max Scherzer to carry the rotation in the meantime. Behind Scherzer, Kodai Senga and Carlos Carrasco will be called upon to make up for Verlander’s lost production.
Still, baseball fans in Queens aren’t feeling too great right now, and it’s easy to see why. Cohen spent a lot of money this offseason to bring a World Series to this organization, and things are already off to a rocky start.
There were sadly many more where that came from.
