NFL Rumors: Aaron Rodgers trade running up against key deadline
By Josh Wilson
Aaron Rodgers has yet to be traded, but there’s a key date by which the Jets and Packers ideally need to get a deal done.
From the moment Aaron Rodgers revealed to the world that he expected to play for the New York Jets in 2023, the pressure was on the Packers and Jets to get a deal done. The fact that the biggest part of the deal, though, Rodgers to New York, was agreed upon in principle, has had the Packers and Jets front offices moving rather slowly through the outside aspects of the deal.
According to an ESPN article that Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano contributed to (subscription required), the latest is that the financial component of the deal is agreed upon, and what’s left is draft pick compensation. The Jets, already, have made it clear what they won’t give up.
With that comes a key deadline both sides are motivated to get a deal done before.
NFL rumors indicate Aaron Rodgers trade should be done before NFL Draft on April 27
The latest in NFL rumors hints that we should expect to see the Rodgers trade finalized before the NFL Draft’s first round on April 27th. According to Dan Graziano, his sources said that April 27 is viewed by both sides as a, “key date,” for the trade.
Interestingly, he also said that the source indicated the trade is not expected to take that long. So, we could see the long-anticipated trade finally going through here in a matter of days.
It seems as though the hard part of negotiations is behind both sides. Evidently, money due to Rodgers before the season begins was a sticking point that has been moved beyond, and now it’s about draft compensation, which is a little more straightforward.
There are reasons why negotiations could slow further, but in general, both sides will want to have this wrapped up before they enter the draft war room so they can make decisions knowing for certain who their quarterback will be in 2023.
