Grapefruit League MVP Matt Olson continues his hot start for Braves
By John Buhler
Matt Olson continues to mash sub-par pitching as the Atlanta Braves’ star first baseman.
It is Matt Olson’s world, and we’re just living in it.
After hitting the cover off seemingly every baseball thrown his way in Spring Training, the Atlanta Braves‘ star first baseman looks to be doing the same vs. lackluster Washington Nationals pitching. The Braves improved 2-0 on Saturday evening with the help of the big fly. Atlanta dug the long ball more than Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux did back in the day. It was a beautiful thing.
Here is Olson’s first home run of the season, as he and right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. went back-to-back in the first inning to make it 2-0 Braves.
And to put the game completely out of reach, Olson went yard again on a two-run shot to make it 7-0 Atlanta, as the Braves hit four majestic moonshots on the afternoon in the nation’s capital.
Until proven otherwise, this team is winning the World Series. I cannot be convinced they will not.
Atlanta Braves improve to 2-0 after a pair of majestic Matt Olson moonshots
Look. I think the gap between World Series contenders like the Braves and probable non-playoff teams like the Nationals is gargantuan in the Senior Circuit. But you know what? It’s good to have baseball back, especially when your favorite team is an absolute behemoth of a buzzsaw. I do remember what it was like when this team stunk seven and eight years, but we are all better now!
My favorite thing about what the Braves are building is that it feels largely sustainable. Olson is only in year two of his contract he signed with Atlanta after being traded over from poverty Oakland. The former Parkview star will end up being better than the guy who calls his games from up in the broadcasting booth. Jeff Francoeur is really good at his new job, but Olson feels special.
Most teams would love to have one player who if it all goes according to plan could be in contention for AL or NL MVP. Well, what if I told you the Braves have upwards of four or five guys who could realistically do it? There’s Olson, Acuña, third baseman Austin Riley and centerfielder Michael Harris II. Even second baseman Ozzie Albies could have an outside shot at it one season.
It is good to be the Braves these days, but it is even better to be Matt Olson slaying at the plate.
