The San Diego Padres remain busy, this time extending All-Star infielder Jake Cronenworth. Here’s the full breakdown of his contract, per sources.
In the days after the 2023 regular season began, the San Diego Padres signed versatile infielder Jake Cronenworth to a seven-year, $80 million contract extension.
It was the latest mega-deal in what has been a busy stretch for the Padres, whose general manager A.J. Preller has either signed or traded for Juan Soto, Josh Hader, Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, Yu Darvish and others in the last eight months. And there are plenty of people in baseball who believe that Preller still has his eyes on Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani when he becomes a free agent after this season.
But Hader, a pending free agent, appeared to be the most obvious candidate for an extension. Yet the Padres believed that Cronenworth was on the verge of a career-best season and sought to extend him despite having three years of control left on his contract.
