The New York Mets have a $200 million edge over the Milwaukee Brewers, but that didn’t do them much good in this early-season series.

Milwaukee outscored New York by a 19-0 scoreline over the first two games of this series. Entering Wednesday afternoon’s matchup, things couldn’t get much worse for the Mets.

The Mets scored six runs in the third game of their three-game set, so I guess that’s an incremental improvement. Unfortunately for them, the Edwin Diaz-less bullpen is starting to show some cracks.

New York’s acting closer, Adam Ottavino, gave up a walk-off home run to Garrett Mitchell in the bottom of the ninth.

That was Mitchell’s third home run in two days, as he had a pair of Brewers blasts in Tuesday’s contest.

Mets fans in a pit of self despair after another loss

Mets fans, please step back from that ledge my friend.

New York won their first series of the season against the Miami Marlins. The Brewers, now tied for the best record in the National League, spanked the Mets in their first home-stand. It’s important to put that in perspective.

However, the Mets roster construction is odd, especially since Justin Verlander went down with an injury. The pitching staff is lacking depth at the moment. Max Scherzer looks off, and Verlander is fragile. Eduardo Escobar is a black hole in any lineup. There’s more, and fans are right to be upset considering the amount of money Steve Cohen spent this offseason.

There were plenty more where that came from.

New York had World Series aspirations heading into the season. They still do, and that shouldn’t change because of a rough road trip to Wisconsin.

But Billy Eppler has some work to do in retooling this roster on the fly.
