The New York Mets are getting hammered with injuries, and it may lead to one of their top prospects getting called up later this week.

The New York Mets aren’t having the best week. Even though they did take two of three in their season-opening series against the Miami Marlins, they were pummeled by the Milwaukee Brewers in a three-game sweep. The Mets would like to put this series behind them, as does the fanbase.

There could be reinforcements on the way starting this Friday.

According to Michael Mayer of Metsmerized, top prospect and catcher Francisco Alvarez is heading to the Mets in case they need to activate him for Friday’s game against the Marlins. There could be a need for Alvarez, as catcher Omar Narvaez left Wednesday’s game against the Brewers due to a left calf injury.

Mets could activate top prospect Francisco Alvarez on Friday

Alvarez made his major league debut in New York last season, playing in just five games. In 22 at-bats, the top prospect in baseball in 2022 recorded a .167 batting average, a .286 on-base percentage, a .500 slugging percentage, one home run, one RBI, two hits, and three runs scored.

Toward the end of spring training, the team opted to send Alvarez down to Triple-A to start the season. In 14 games, Alvarez slashed .107/.194/.107 while recording one RBI, one run scored, three hits, and 10 strikeouts in 28 at-bats. New York decided to go with the tandem of Narvaez and Tomas Nido behind home plate.

Through four games with Syracuse, Alvarez went 4-for-16 in the batter’s box, while recording two home runs, four RBI, and four runs scored.

The Mets were supposed to have their home opener on Thursday, but that has been postponed due to inclement weather in Queens, N.Y. So, Mets fans will be waiting for an announcement to see if they will activate Alvarez, or if Narvaez will avoid a trip on the injured list.
