Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora revealed that he dropped a famous line from the film Dodgeball on starting pitcher Chris Sale after a rough start.

The Red Sox haven’t gotten off to the best start to the 2023 season. Yes, it’s still incredibly early to write any team off, but Boston carries high expectations every campaign. On Thursday, they began their four-game series against the Detroit Tigers, and ace Chris Sale took the mound for his second start of the season.

It was a rough start initially for Sale, but he was able to secure his first win not only of this season, but his first since 2021, as the Red Sox secured the 6-3 victory.

Sale got out of a jam in the first inning, when he walked right fielder Matt Vierling and shortstop Javier Baez immediately. But, he was able to strike out center fielder Riley Greene, first baseman Spencer Torkelson, and left fielder Eric Haase in succession.

Manager Alex Cora revealed that he dropped a quote from the 2004 comedy film Dodgeball, to Sale after getting out of the first inning. And no, it wasn’t “dodge, duck, dip, dive and…dodge.” Rather it was “bold strategy.”

That quote was used by actor Jason Bateman’s character, color commentator Pepper Brooks.

Sale did surrender three runs during his start, coming on a two-run homer by Jake Rogers in the bottom of the second and and RBI single by Miguel Cabrera. But after a solo home run by third baseman Rafael Devers in the top of the fourth and an RBI double in the sixth, the Red Sox were able to tie the game.

They were able to break ahead in that sixth inning after a three-run homer by outfielder Adam Duvall.

In his start, Sale struck out seven batters, walked three, and surrendered three earned runs on four hits in 5.0 innings of work. That was enough to get Sale his first win since Sept. 22, 2021 against the New York Mets.

The Red Sox now improve to 3-4 on the year, thanks to Sale’s “bold strategy.”
