4 STL Cardinals who won’t be on the roster by May 1
Moves are on the horizon for the Cardinals with recent dramatics. Who will be off the Cardinals roster by May 1?
Only a few games into the season and the St. Louis Cardinals have been greeted by many of the same frustrations that have plagued them in seasons past. The unnecessary drama came to the Cardinals clubhouse this week due to a perceived lack of hustle while the team struggles through the main concern they should have addressed much sooner – pitching.
Whether it’s making trades or bringing up fresh players from the minor leagues, the Cardinals must make moves to meet the high expectations they have for themselves.
The Cardinals went 2-4 during the first two series in St. Louis. The Cardinals should have addressed the pitching concerns that have been an issue for several seasons now. Manager Oli Marmol publicly criticizing Tyler O’Neill for a perceived lack of hustle almost seems like a deflection of the main issue – pitching.
STL Cardinals rumors: Tyler O’Neill may be off the roster due to a trade
Marmol attacking O’Neill’s effort publicly seems unnecessary. Just look at this breakdown of the situation by FanSided’s Kevin Henry.
It should have been handled between the player and the manager. Making it so public has upset O’Neill and allowed Marmol to double down, removing him from the lineup on Wednesday. It doesn’t seem like the Cardinal Way. As O’Neill told the media, he has always given 100 percent and doesn’t want it thought otherwise.
How this has played out does make one wonder if there is a lingering issue between O’Neill and Marmol.
According to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, before Friday’s game against Milwaukee, Marmol said O’Neill is one of the most talented players with the Cardinals. He said he wants to help O’Neill get to that “next level” as a player.
How O’Neill and Marmol’s relationship continues should be interesting over the next few days. Hopefully, the drama is over, they worked out their issues privately, and all is good. The public should never have known about this issue, and it seems otherwise petty that we do know about it.
How this drama has played out could lead to a trade of O’Neill. Jordan Walker has been outstanding in his rookie season. Dylan Carlson is slowly coming into his own this season after lingering injuries. Carlson’s lack of consistent starts does lead one to believe O’Neill could stick around. While Lars Nootbaar is currently on the injured list, Alec Burleson has stepped up to fill whatever role is asked of him.
Having O’Neill in the mix would be ideal, given his power and potential. But seeing him traded would not be surprising if the issues between O’Neill and Marmol persist.
If he is traded, it must be for a top-tier starting pitcher.
O’Neill did return to the lineup Friday. He was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
