Has The Masters ever had a Monday finish?
The Masters in 2023 has been suspended three times now for weather, which brings a Monday finish into play. Has The Masters ever finished on Monday before?
Coming into The Masters in 2023, we knew that there were going to be rainy and cold conditions at Augusta National Golf Club. The hope was that the weather would be manageable enough for there not to be many delays, if any at all, and that the tournament would finish on time.
As of Saturday, that has not happened. Play was suspended during the second round on Friday and players did not return to the course until Saturday morning. Fighting through rain and cold temperatures in the 40s, they were able to get to the cut and begin the third round. At 3:15 p.m. ET, though, play was again suspended as the pouring rain continued and made conditions too difficult for players and patrons to handle. Brooks Koepka still held the lead at 13-under with Jon Rahm in second at 9-under.
With roughly half of the third round still left to play and the entire final round on deck for The Masters, there is now a growing chance that we could be looking at a rare Monday finish. How rare is it, though? Let’s take a look if it’s happened before at Augusta.
Has The Masters ever finished on Monday? When was the last Masters Monday finish?
Due to tremendous efforts from Augusta National Golf Club and the tournament committees and course superintendents, there has not been a Masters Monday finish in 40 years — but it has happened before.
The last Monday finish at The Masters came in 1983, when Spanish legend Seve Ballesteros came through after a rain-soaked tournament and won his second Green Jacket. There have been four other Monday finishes at this major championship in the 86 previous times it was played. Here’s a look at the tournaments and the winners from those events.
- 1936: Horton Smith
- 1938: Henry Picard
- 1961: Charles Coe
- 1973: Tommy Aaron
- 1983: Seve Ballesteros
Though he trails Koepka by four strokes as of the suspension of play on Saturday in the third round, Rahm hopes that the Spanish luck of one of his heroes, Seve, will come his way at Augusta if indeed the tournament does have to finish on Monday.
