MLB Rumors: New York Mets should trade SS Ronny Mauricio

The New York Mets are the definition of a team trying to win right now. They paid Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, two aging pitchers, deals that give them $43.3 million dollars annually. Not total, annually. They have the highest payroll in MLB history. They need to go all in.

They’ve only played eight games, but we can tell that they need another bat. Particularly one that can supply power and hit behind Pete Alonso. There’s a reason they tried to sign Carlos Correa this offseason.

Can prospects Brett Baty and Francisco Alvarez supply that much-needed power? Maybe, but that’s an impossible question to answer. The Mets need a proven bat to hit in the middle of the order.

Trading someone like Ronny Mauricio should’ve already happened. Mauricio is New York’s sixth-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline and is one without a clear long-term position.

While he’s dabbled in other positions in Winter Ball, Mauricio has been strictly a shortstop in the minors. The Mets have Francisco Lindor locked into that spot for a very long time. With Jeff McNeil entrenched at second and Brett Baty the future at third, Mauricio has no spot.

The Mets can trade him and perhaps package other pieces to land the bat they’ve been missing. It’s a move that makes sense for the Mets, Mauricio, and whatever team acquires him.
