Travis d’Arnaud heads to IL after dirty play at plate by Rougned Odor
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves have suffered another injury, as catcher Travis d’Arnaud is heading to IL after a scary collision at the plate involving San Diego Padres second baseman Rougned Odor.
It was a miserable night for the Atlanta Braves, and an even worse evening for Travis d’Arnaud.
Well, whatever the weather, whenever the weather, whether we like it or not, the Braves played terribly. The final score may not suggest it, but Atlanta was out of sorts the entire game vs. the San Diego Padres in sub-50 temperatures. As if the Braves needed to place another key piece on IL, d’Arnaud is heading there after Rougned Odor forgot how to slide while trying to score a run.
D’Arnaud stayed in the game for a bit after taking a forearm shiver to the dome, but he had to be removed after experiencing concussion-like symptoms. Chadwick Tromp was recalled to replace d’Arnaud as went on the seven-day IL. It is still early in the season, but the Braves have been bitten by the injury bug badly with Kyle Wright, Max Fried, Michael Harris II and now d’Arnaud.
Here is the play at the plate that essentially knocked d’Arnaud out for the week. Great slide, man…

Atlanta made the official transaction of calling up Tromp and placing d’Arnaud on IL Easter Sunday.
Not saying the Braves should retaliate on Sunday Night Baseball, but Odor might experience some primetime chin music at The Battery in the series finale.

If there is any consolation prize to this boneheaded move by Odor, he was technically called out after the fact. Not for cleaning d’Arnaud’s clock, but that he forgot to touch home plate. He tried to after the second run scored on the play at the plate, but that is not how it works in baseball. San Diego would later put a fourth run across in the latter stages of game to put it out of reach, 4-1.
Atlanta is fortunate to have one of the best catching tandems in all of baseball for another season. While d’Arnaud has been a mainstay in Atlanta over the last few years, the Braves traded for former Oakland Athletics backstop Sean Murphy in a three-team deal that sent William Contreras to the Milwaukee Brewers. Murphy is great behind the dish, but even he cannot start every game.
For now, Atlanta is not in a horrible position. The Braves have depth seemingly everywhere across the diamond. However, they are going to need to win on Sunday night to split their first home series of the season. After taking two-of-three vs. the Washington Nationals and sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals on the road, Atlanta is riding its first two-game losing streak of the young season.
Here is to a speedy recovery for d’Arnaud because the Braves need his bat back in the lineup stat.
