MLB Rumors: Could Oli Marmol be on the hot seat for Cardinals?

It’s a bit of a stretch to say Oli Marmol’s job is on the line, but his early-season feud certainly didn’t do much to quell the concerns of a rabid Cardinals fanbase. Baseball is a way of life in St. Louis, as is the Cardinal Way, when properly applied.

Marmol accused Cards outfielder Tyler O’Neill of a lack of hustle, something which O’Neill took quite seriously and even denied. Most importantly, however, Marmol lost the trust of some in his clubhouse by taking out these frustrations with the media.

Obviously, it’s my job to report such things, so perhaps my angle is a little hypocritical, but this ought to have been handled in-house, and left as is. O’Neill sounded bothered that Marmol went public, and he was forced to defend himself.

Just days later, the drama between O’Neill and Marmol has simmered somewhat. Yet, that hasn’t stopped Marmol from making questionable on-field decisions. His choice to pinch-hit for Brendan Donovan — a respected veteran in the clubhouse who can make solid contact against most pitchers — was an odd one.

It backfired, and St. Louis lost the game to Milwaukee, as well as the series.
