Former Astros player who revived sign-stealing scandal clears Jose Altuve

The 2017 Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal was revived by former slugger Evan Gattis just a few days ago, but he did clear one Jose Altuve theory.

The Astros sign-stealing scandal isn’t going anywhere thanks to former Houston player Evan Gattis, who admitted to PED usage among other things.

Gattis played in Houston from 2015-18, and won a World Series with the team in 2017. That season was arguably one of the best of his career, as he slashed .263/.311/.457 in 84 games. Just a season before, he hit a career-high 32 home runs. Something about this is fishy.

FanSided’s Cody Williams summed up Gattis’s antics just a few days ago:

But in doing so, he made numerous admissions about his individual role in the sign stealing scandal.Specifically, Gattis not only admitted that his home run in Game 7 of the ALCS against the New York Yankees was a “trash can bang”, but that he was probably on PEDs at points of the season as well.”"

When the Houston sign-stealing scandal was revealed and punishments were doled out, JomBoy Media, then a group of baseball-loving New York Yankees fans, found a series of sketchy circumstances about Jose Altuve’s walk-off home run against Aroldis Chapman in Game 7 of the 2019 ALCS.

Altuve did not want teammates to rip off his jersey, with some wondering if Houston were up to their cheating ways once again. Gattis, for one, doesn’t believe those theories.

“I don’t know if there’s any truth to buzzers,” Gattis said. “If there was Altuve wouldn’t want it anyway. He’s a reactionary hitter.”

The so-called buzzer would tell Altuve which pitch was coming, and when to swing at timely fastballs.

It should be noted that Gattis wasn’t on that team, but he seems like someone who would be in the know.
