St. Louis Cardinals top prospect Jordan Walker made the Opening Day roster, and tied an MLB record that hadn’t been matched in over 100 years.

To think that MLB teams in the past would send down their top prospects despite strong spring training performances, just for service time manipulation. That is no longer the trend, as teams are bringing up their top prospects for Opening Day if they have played well in the spring. That is exactly what the St. Louis Cardinals did this year, as they named outfielder Jordan Walker to their Opening Day roster.

In a little less than two weeks, Walker has already tied an MLB record.

In the ninth inning of the Cardinals’ game against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday, Walker sent an 84.4 mph slider thrown by Connor Seabold past shortstop Ezequiel Tovar and into left field for a single. And with that, his hitting streak has extended to 12 games since the start of his career.

This is now tied for the longest hitting streak for a player 20 or younger to begin their career since Eddie Murphy did so back in 1912! That’s right Walker tied a record that had been in place for 111 years!

Cardinals: Jordan Walker ties MLB record to start career

Walker was in danger of missing out on tying the record, as he had gone 0-for-3 at the plate with two strikeouts. His strikeout in the seventh inning was, questionable at best, especially when looking at the pitching chart.

But, luckily that strikeout wasn’t that consequential, as Walker made up for it with his single in the ninth inning, and he would score his fourth run of his season after a double by Paul Goldschmidt later that inning.

With his historic 12th game in the books, Walker has now recorded a .319 batting average, a .360 on-base percentage, a .489 slugging percentage, two home runs, eight RBI, and 15 hits.

The Cardinals will next play on Thursday, Apr. 13, at 7:45 p.m. ET against the rival Pittsburgh Pirates. The fanbase in St. Louis and the entire baseball world will be watching to see if Walker can officially break Murphy’s record.
