The Chicago Cubs agreed to a contract extension with outfielder Ian Happ, who was frequently mentioned in trade rumors last season.
It turns out the Cubs didn’t trade Ian Happ for a reason.
Just days after agreeing to an extension with Nico Hoerner, front office executive Jed Hoyer hinted that something else might be in the works. That something, it would appear, is with Ian Happ.
Happ was frequently mentioned in trade talks the last few years, as it was thought Chicago would prefer to trade him while he still has value rather than letting the 28-year-old reach free agency.
Instead, Chicago determined that Happ matches their competitive timeline. Spring training contract talks didn’t go anywhere, but both sides remained willing to discuss a deal past Opening Day.

Cubs contract details with Ian Happ
Happ would’ve landed the Cubs a prospect-laden package last season, but dealing away an All-Star talent would’ve also pushed back their window. Instead, Happ and the team have agreed to a new extension that will start in 2024.

The 28-year-old made his first All-Star team and won a Gold Glove last year for his outfield defense. Happ was set to be one of the best free-agent bats on the market next offseason. Instead, he will stay in the Windy City through at least 2026, as there are no options in this deal.
Outfielder Ian Happ and the Chicago Cubs are in agreement on a three-year, $61 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN. The deal will run from 2024-26 and takes one of the best potential free agent bats off the market. First on the scene was @Michael_Cerami.

Perhaps most notable in Happ’s deal is the full no-trade clause he received. Considering Happ was shopped for the majority of the last few years, this level of security is unprecedented for him in his career.
We’ll have more on this story momentarily.
