Cons of MLB expansion in Salt Lake City
When it comes to cons involving MLB expansion and Salt Lake City, there really aren’t that many. One could say that Utah may be late to the dance and would need to get to the back of the line, but to that I would say, better late than never.
While other cities like Nashville, Charlotte, and Portland have been angling to get a professional baseball team for sometime, Salt Lake City’s tardiness shouldn’t necessarily preclude them from getting a seat at the table.
Market size might be the biggest con for Salt Lake City. While other cities like Cincinnati, Kansas City, and Milwaukee currently have major league teams in their cities, the lack of investment on the part of small market owners has been a point of contention lately.
Rob Manfred would likely want some assurances from owners that wherever Major League Baseball decides to plant their newest franchises will be a venue where they can grow the game and see new fans entertained. In short, owning a team means investing in the product on the field.
While there are some drawbacks to Salt Lake City, it’s a smart play for Major League Baseball to evaluate all their options. MLB expansion is coming, and it may be coming to Utah.
