MLB insider: Braves calling up obvious choice after Orlando Arcia injury
Orlando Arcia will miss time after fracturing his left wrist. Here’s how the Atlanta Braves will fill the shortstop position in the meantime.
With Orlando Arcia going on the Injured List due to a microfracture in his left wrist, the Atlanta Braves are expected to recall shortstop Vaughn Grissom from Triple-A Gwinnett, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The Braves are off on Thursday and resume play on Friday, starting a six-game road trip against the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres. But Grissom will rejoin the major-league team and have yet another opportunity to cement his status as the team’s shortstop, both in the short- and long-term.
Grissom, 22, entered spring training as the favorite to win the shortstop position. After all, he made his major-league debut at age-21 last season, and hit .291/.353/.440 with a .792 OPS in 41 games. He worked out this offseason with veteran third base coach Ron Washington and showed flashes this spring of being a high-end major leaguer.

But Grissom was demoted to Triple-A as the shortstop position went to Arcia, who was given a three-year, $7.3 million extension before the season. In Grissom’s place, Arcia thrived and hit a promising .333/.400/.511 with a .911 OPS, and proved the organization correct in choosing him instead of the young up-and-comer in Grissom.
Grissom, however, appears ready for major-league action. In 10 games in Triple-A, he hit a scorching .366/.458/.585 with one home run and four RBI while posting a 1.044 OPS. Perhaps now is when Grissom wins the shortstop job and doesn’t let go of it. His Triple-A numbers would sure seem to suggest he’s prepared to do so.
