St. Louis Cardinals announcer Chip Caray had plenty to say about Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jack Suwinski’s throw home on the Cards winning run.

Chip Caray is in his first season in the St. Louis Cardinals broadcast booth, as he left the Atlanta Braves for this job. Chip is the grandson of legendary baseball broadcaster Harry Caray.

On Friday night, however, Caray had some fun at the expense of Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jack Suwinski. The young Bucs player tried to throw out the eventual winning St. Louis run at home. It did not go well.

Suwinski isn’t exactly known for his arm. It showed on Friday night, but it wasn’t Suwinski’s throw alone which cost Pittsburgh the game. They failed to provide any run support behind Johan Oviedo, a former Cardinals pitcher who barely made the Pirates roster out of spring training.

So far, Oviedo has been a tremendous story in Pittsburgh, but his offense failed him last night, not just Suwinski’s arm.

Caray is making his mark in St. Louis this season. While the Cardinals are off to a slow start, Caray’s already had several memorable moments, none more savage that when he called out Suwinski for his weak throw home.

“Here comes the throw, anddddd….it’s terrible,” Caray said.

Pittsburgh put 12 runners on base Friday night, but weren’t able to drive in a run. Much of that had to do with some excellent defense, namely by the always sure-handed Nolan Arenado. It wasn’t a pretty win for the Cards, but it was a necessary one for a team that has struggled early this season.

Willson Contreras, for one, has fought the need to replace a legend in Yadier Molina, Contreras broke through with an RBI to extend the St. Louis lead.

As funny as Caray’s comment was, Friday night’s win was symbolic of an early-season turnaround, if anything.
