Ohio State’s spring game was this Saturday, and some Buckeyes fans have already given up on Kyle McCord, who may be the starting QB this season.

Replacing CJ Stroud isn’t easy. Stroud is one of the better Ohio State quarterbacks in recent memory, and very nearly defeated the National Champion Georgia Bulldogs. McCord may not reach those heights, but it’s too early to judge him in his first spring game.

The good news for McCord is he has a litany of weapons, including Marvin Harrison Jr., who would be the top wide receiver selected in this year’s draft class were he allowed to enter.

McCord’s primary competition for the starting job is Devin Brown, who missed the scrimmage with a finger injury that is not deemed serious. Neither player is entering the transfer portal just yet. BuckNuts Will Backus summed up McCord’s up-and-down performance well:

"“Ultimately, it is still spring. There is no guarantee that McCord will win the starting job, as this competition will stretch right up to the first game. He is also still finding his footing with the spotlight on him, which will take time to adjust to. He certainly showed flashes during the spring game, and during his limited playing time last season.”"

Ohio State spring game: Kyle McCord gets mixed reviews from Buckeyes fans

Kyle McCord completed over 50 percent of his passes for 200 yards and a touchdown. He did get off to a tough start, however, which made some Buckeyes fans turn on him early.

There were plenty more where that came from.

McCord looked rough in his first few series, but discovered the key to this Buckeyes passing offense very quickly — throw the ball to Harrison, Jr.
