NFL Draft rumors: Talks swirling around Steelers trading up for huge target
By Mark Powell
The Pittsburgh Steelers could make a major NFL Draft trade, moving up to select Georgia Bulldogs star Jalen Carter, if the price is right.
It’s no secret that Jalen Carter is one of the more talented, and controversial, players in this NFL Draft class.
Carter was involved in the car accident which tragically killed one of his Georgia teammates, as well as a staffer. Charges were filed against the two-time National Champion who denied street racing to police.
While this dropped Carter from the No. 1 overall pick conversation, he’s still likely to go high, as his talent is too great to ignore. Carter is a potential top-10 selection, and the Pittsburgh Steelers are an intriguing destination.
As Peter King noted in his Football Morning in America column, Pittsburgh is a great scheme fit for Carter:
"“Jalen Carter has two visits to top-10 teams left before Wednesday’s deadline for players to make pre-draft visits to teams. That’s what agent Drew Rosenhaus told me Saturday. I’ll tell you the team that is the most perfect fit for Carter in the NFL: the Pittsburgh Steelers, who’d have to trade up from 17 to get him.”"
Moving up seven spots would be expensive, but it may be worth it for a potential franchise-altering talent on the defensive line.
NFL Draft rumors: Will the Steelers move up for Jalen Carter?
The Steelers have been mentioned as a team interested in trading up, specifically with the Chicago Bears, who own the ninth pick. Ryan Poles wants to add to his war chest of future draft picks.
Pittsburgh has several needs, including cornerback and offensive tackle. If they trade up for an OT, a player like Paris Johnson or Peter Skronoski would be perfect. If cornerback is their intention, look for Devon Witherspoon or Christian Gonzalez to come off the board.
However, the Steelers regime has a knack for selecting the best player available at their slot, not just based on need. Carter is arguably the most talented, surefire player in this draft. If he’s on the board at pick nine, expect Pittsburgh to at least make a call.
