Darin Ruf traded to the New York Mets

In the moment, this trade seemed … odd. The Mets acquired Darin Ruf from the San Francisco Giants for four players: third baseman/outfielder J.D. Davis, left-hander Thomas Szapucki, left-hander Nick Zack and right-hander Carson Seymour.

At the time, Ruf was struggling in San Francisco. But the Mets viewed him as an upgrade versus left-handed pitching (he had an .886 OPS against left-handers at the time of the trade).

The trade did not work out. At all.

Ruf, 36, hit .152/.216/.197 with zero home runs and seven RBI with the Mets last season. He was released by the team before 2023 Opening Day and ultimately re-signed with the Giants. The trade made little sense at the time and ultimately did not work out for either Ruf or the Mets.

Grade: F.
